Classic information, clear descriptions and informative illustrations. If you are considering the leather working as a hobby this is a must have book.

So after buying several knives who's sheaths I'm unsatisfied with I've decided to take up leatherwork to a limited degree. Knife sheaths, holsters, maybe a sling or two nothing too fancy or outrageous in my ambitions. I googled, I YouTube searched, I read and watched tutorials, and I figured I'd better get some more information and a better understanding of tools, they're use, techniques, etc. I'm glad I did too!!!After reading thru Al Stohlmans book I went back and watched YouTube videos. It's funny but the guys who looked like they might know what they were doing I was able to pick out mistakes they made and see where they really didn't do that great of a job. I'm not trashing anyone, my hats off to anyone willing to better themselves and help out others! Hell that's why I take the time to write these reviews!!! I'm just saying that little bit of extra knowledge and understanding I gained really became apparent after reading this book! It was pretty surprising. After reading this book on hand seeing leather I have the confidence to try making my first sheath. I don't expect it to come out perfect as I'm a neophyte but I don't feel as much need to spend a month making scrap leather and practicing on it to teach myself everything! I'm going to practice some mind you! I need to learn how to use bevelers hands on, the pricking chisels, groove cutters, etc but after I get the basics down reasonably I'll jump right into making a sheath slow and steady using the teachings and techniques in this book.I love books like this. Written by Craftsmen and artisans so that their craft and trade never dies it just gets picked up and carried on by the future. To much of the old ways are lost in today's modern world and it's important to remember the past and how the old timers did it, and did/made so much with so little and none of the modern technology society today takes for granted. From a newbie at leather I highly recommend this book to others like me who want to understand and study what they're going to do rather than just watch YouTube videos with no in depth explanations. I learned a lot like threading a needle properly, how to deal with a break in the thread while sewing, how to not waste my several feet of left over thread and still get professional results, and more! Simple and easily understood is the writing style with no technical garbage from someone trying to make themselves sounds smarter than you are. Just written by a man who obviously wants you to understand what you're endeavoring to do and carry on the traditions he's trying to teach you.I've spent a lot of money on books in my life and this one definitely was not wasted money!! It's a keeper and going into my library!!!! Fwiw my library consists of probably well over 1,000 books. So yeah I've wasted some money along the way on books that aren't considered part of that library.I hope this review helps someone out. I purchased my book with my own money for full asking price off Amazon receiving no discounts, compensation, or sexual favors for my review. It's simply my intent to review items I buy and use showing the good bad ugly and indifferent where I can I better help others make educated buying decisions. I spend the money and make mistakes so you don't have to! LolWith all that said if you find my review helpful please let Amazon and others know by clicking yes. If you find it a big steaming pile let them know as well!!Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope this helps someone out!

This is either a reprint of something from maybe the 70s or looks just like old 60s and 70s DIY manuals. It has some interesting stitches and I learned a bit, but some of the information is dated enugh to not be that useful. The illustrations are sometimes not very clear or high quality. It is not a treatise either only 69 pages. Though has many really useful techniques described. It also includes plans for a stitching horse. Definite emphasis on leather work for saddles and tack.

69 pages, superbly drawn images that are extremely helpful. Plenty of tips and trade secrets. I don't really like his designs but that is secondary to the fabulous tutorial. Gives a perspective that videos cannot accomplish. Great reference manual.

Excellent "book" - the only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that this is more magazine than book. That said, get some clear contact paper & cover it like I did - now it will last. Invaluable information - the incredibly detailed stitching pony construction plans on the inside back cover are worth the price alone.

This is a helpful introduction, but focuses on the basics of one fairly unpopular method. The bulk of the book is dedicated to teaching the hand stitch or saddle stitch. Stohlman teaches what could be described as Western stitching, with straight stitches, marked with an overstitch wheel in a groove. European-style saddle stitching using a pricking iron, diamond awl and laying the stitches at an oblique angle seems to be far more popular with leather craftspeople and consumers of high-end leather goods. Although the technique varies only slightly, browsing leather working forums, one will quickly realize many people have some difficulty with the European style stitching that is so sought-after. This book doesn't help with those subtle issues.

This book becomes more useful the more you know. I think if you are a beginner, it's utility is minimal--too much just doesn't make sense if you don't already have something of a knowledge base, some experience, and some idea of what you want to do. But as I've gotten deeper into leather working, this book has become invaluable.

Great book, it takes a complete beginer and shows how to sew leather the old fashioned way. Profuse illustrations. If a person is interested in stiching holsters, or some other leather craft item, this is the book to get.Stohlman's books on cases are a good second purchase, as they show some additional techniques for tricky projects.

Many of the techniques in this little book are certainly worth knowing either for leathercrafting or repair of leather & vinyl goods that are going to fall apart over time. As always with this author the book is well laid out with clear easy to follow illustrations, that show a range of tasks from simple to complex that can be used by novice & experienced craftsperson's alike.
