Do yourself a favor and read this one! It's another winner from Margaret Mizushima! As if you couldn't tell, Hunting Hour is my new favorite in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. It's a nice blend of emotion, investigation, and discovery that all seem to suit the story very well. It also addresses the needs of a dog lovers soul and dares the reader to take in some difficult realizations about everyday life. All in all, I would call this one excellent story. I am impressed with the growth that Mattie has made throughout the series, but I have to say that I appreciate the way the author has included the continuing relationship between this character and Robo, her dog. I find so many of the canine mysteries to be a little lacking in that respect. Here, you have a character who is committed to teaching her canine partner but also learning from him. Moreover, you have several characters who support that relationship very well. I like this story so much because the characters are not perfect, nor are they too odd. They have insecurities, and it seems everyone is working to figure themselves out. Solid.
These K-9 Mysteries just keep getting better. I don't like and don't read romances so the relationship between Mattie and Dr. Cole, the vet, is starting to be a bit of an issue for me. So far, though, it's not enough to stop me from reading the next one. This was #3 and I wanted to find #4, Burning Ridge, and get it into my Kindle before my Jersey shore vacation in a couple of weeks. Alas, it doesn't come out until September 11, 2018, I think. I will pre-order. Meanwhile, in #3, a child who has become very dear to Mattie has disappeared. The police work that follows is tense and exhausting for Mattie and the rest of the Timber Creek police. Robo also learns a new skill and that's fun to read about. If you decide to read it, remember it is a series, although each book in the series has it's own plot and ending. Never a hint of cliffhanger here, as I find never happens with the best authors, only with those who have to trick readers into buying the next installment. Mizushima books are well plotted, fairly quick reads, and the ending ties everything up nicely. Very enjoyable.
With each book, the characters develop. Mattie and her K-9 partner and best friend Robo the German Shepherd are learning to work together as a team. Dog language is subtle and consists of body language, with things done or not done. Mattie learns more in each book how to read what Robo is telling her.Naturally this is a murder mystery so this time a young school girl dies. Was it accidental or deliberate that the victim ended up dead on what the high school kids call Smokers' Hill? A series of clues might point one way, but some do not. There are several suspects with no clear main person of interest. Even the girl's father is suspected.Things take a turn for the personal for Mattie when her friend the veterinarian, Cole's younger daughter goes missing. Mattie has been avoiding Cole lately, feeling things were moving too fast for her comfort with the divorced Cole and herself. He and his two daughters were beginning to feel like family to Mattie, but her childhood family was an unhappy experience she does not wish to repeat.Throw in a recluse who is off his medications and demanding of the veterinarian's time. Add a camp-out in the nearby national forest of several young men on a sex offender list driving a suspicious vehicle. Plus an illegal gambling club, a spoiled high school boy who is the son of a local rancher and an awkward young man working as a feed and seed store clerk and there you have it. Which one of these men abducted little Sophie, the veterinarian's younger daughter? Or was it a complete stranger? There is a lot packed into this book and the author does a good job of dragging red herrings across the abducter's tracks. Mattie almost falls for one or two, but her training and her colleagues pull her back. The ending was not quite what I expected but the mystery's loose ends are tied off neatly. The personal relationships end on a promising note but readers will have to wait for Ms. Mizushima's next book to find out what happens there.
I am a retired K9 handler-trainer. This is done so well and so closely to my training, all except the leading the way for the bloodhound. I would not have done it that way because of the exhaust fumes and my dogs nose. But, this is wonderfully written and coached by some real professionals. Thank you for a wonderful read. I'm looking forward to reading ALL of your books.
I discovered this non-cozy K-9 murder mystery in my virtual TBR stack. I admit I’m a sucker for mysteries about police dogs and their handlers. This is a new-to-me author, but I read “Hunting Hour†as a stand-alone without problems. The plot and subplots are straightforward, so I was able to pinpoint the murderer when he was introduced. Plus, the red herrings were obvious.Deputy Mattie Cobb—prickly protagonist, dog handler and Robo’s partner—is psychologically compromised by what appears to be recently-awakened childhood trauma. Many authors are saddling protagonists with psychological issues, but I find it difficult to relate to a psychologically-damaged deputy, who probably shouldn’t be on the job. Mattie jumps to conclusions about suspects without adequate information and/or investigation. A detective warns her not to go cowboy, which I thought meant that either Mattie had gone rogue before or her superiors knew something was troubling her.I liked Detective Stella LoSasso, who is “like a cross between a mother hen and Godzilla.†My favorite character: Robo the awesome German Shepherd. I did say I was a sucker for books about police dogs.A rather important thread was not tied off, one having to do with the murderer’s odd choice of bolt hole.
