I hate to put this in a product review because it's not related to the book itself. It's about how it is on Kindle.This is the first time I've ever seen poorly rendered digital content in a book I purchased from Amazon. On a number of pages, the text is cut off at the top of a paragraph.Further, it's very difficult to find a place where this can be properly reported. Nothing I found is set up to let users report quality issues with digital content. It doesn't belong in the review, which I hope I can edit later if this problem is addressed.Please fix the digital version of this book so readers can see all of the text. Thank you.
This book is a good primer into the historical development of "salafi-jihadism" and provides a valuable overview of the current ideas centered around this movement. Although the author present a clear and presentable argument, I found several opportunities where he could have explored and explained ideas in more detail. This book also primarily addresses AlQaida and doesn't touch much on ISIS. Lastly, while the book is clear in explaining the 5 ideas that center salafi-jihadism, I didn't find them to be particularly mutually exclusive; there is overlap in ideas. All in all, it's a the only one of its kind and is a well written and informative book.
Sound and scholarly. I have some background as a lawyer (not as a theologian) in Islamic law. Because the book addresses the subject matter from a historical and theological as well as legal perspective, I found to be heavy lifting. I bought the Kindle edition and regretted it. The first eight or so pages of the book gives good definitions of Arabic/Islamic terms and concepts. Because I had the book on Kindle, I couldn't print down or photocopy those first pages and I found myself have to repeatedly jump back to those pages while reading the book. Not a casual read but a careful and scholarly discussion of Salafi-Jihadism.

Interesting book, not much else available on the subject for the general reader. Not the easiest of reads, requires considerable concentration to follow, particularly the many very similarly spelt but dissimilar meaning Arabic words.
I enjoyed this book, but the callbacks and references to events, scholars, and other personalities can be challenging. I found myself google-ing something every other page, which is fine, but there’s just so much historical reference it might seem too much for others. Overall, a highly informative book.
Maher has a grasp on Salafi-Jihadism that rivals that of any academic or policy wonk. With deep discussion and clear analysis the author brings understanding to a complicated and history-filled belief.
Thorough and scholarly yet able to be understood - maybe not always on the first read. It is an excellent read wherein one must suspend presuppositions and truly learn.
